Joe Brady emphasized several times during his introductory press conference as the head coach of the Bills that he hails from the Sean Payton coaching tree.
He has now recruited one of Payton’s long-time offensive assistants.
Pete Carmichael Jr. is set to join Buffalo as the team’s offensive coordinator, as reported by NFL Media.
Carmichael, aged 54, was with the Saints from 2006 to 2023, where he spent the majority of his tenure as the offensive coordinator under Payton. Although he did not take on the role of full-time play caller until after Payton left the organization following the 2021 season, he was dismissed after two seasons under head coach Dennis Allen.
Carmichael reconnected with Payton at the Broncos, taking on the position of senior offensive assistant in 2024 and fulfilling that role for the past two seasons.
Brady has indicated that he will continue to call the offensive plays for the Bills as head coach. However, Carmichael’s addition to the team will play a significant role in executing Buffalo’s offensive strategies throughout the week.
