There are few activities that I enjoy as much as sewing. Whether it’s fulfilling a special request from one of my children, crafting a small gift for my husband, or creating something special for myself, each sewing project is distinct and enjoyable in its own right. Even when I am producing the same item multiple times, every piece of fabric presents a unique challenge that demands its own solutions. Sewing, akin to small-scale engineering, ignites my creative spirit. However, while the thrill of the challenge inspires me to continue, it was not this excitement that initially motivated me to learn the craft. In fact, it was quite the contrary. I found myself feeling overwhelmed by the multitude of decisions and the lack of tools – many of which I was unaware I needed – that could simplify the process. Understanding that you may encounter similar feelings, I would like to share some fundamental sewing concepts that are essential to grasp – all within a judgment-free environment.
Basics – What You Need
As I guide you through the process of sewing – a beginner's guide – I want to emphasize that there are three essential items I always keep on hand, regardless of the project. Indeed, just three items:
Needle
Thread
Fabric
These may appear to be trivial items to you. However, upon reflection, these are truly all you require to begin your sewing journey. The more elaborate tools – such as scissors, needle threaders, and thimbles – are merely additional luxuries.
I have reached a point where I carry a small sewing kit containing a needle and some thread in my purse at all times, as you never know when a soccer game might result in a torn jersey during half-time, a horse-riding lesson could necessitate a quick sock repair, or a business meeting might be interrupted due to a fallen hem. All of these scenarios have occurred to me, and I have been rescued by that simple needle and thread. It may seem trivial, but this small...
A quality pair of scissors (not the type you store in the utility drawer – you require sharp, HIGH-QUALITY scissors – specifically a designated "fabric only" pair)
Extra thread (I maintain 4-5 spools of white and black at all times)
Fabric tape measure (for measuring heads, arms, devices, and more – the most versatile tape measure available)
Needle Minder (this can be a magnet or a pin cushion, or even a piece of tape, something to prevent your needle from rolling away mid-project)
Sewing Pins or Clips (it may be obvious, or it may not, but you often need a substantial number of pins, and at times you may not – it’s simply better to have them on hand)
Washable Marker or Pencil (akin to possessing a magic disappearing ink trick, these are ideal for tracing your patterns and are useful for jotting down notes for yourself while sewing)
Washi Tape (continue reading below for my suggestions – this is brilliant for beginners)
If you are interested in learning more about assembling a sewing kit for beginners, I have an excellent resource here that I wish I had when I was learning to sew. It includes a bit of everything, but rather than merely being a list of tools, it will clarify why each item is beneficial to have, allowing you to determine if you truly believe you will need it or not.
