Kano State - Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has submitted a bill to the Kano State House of Assembly aimed at prohibiting same-sex marriage. Additionally, the bill seeks to ban other practices considered immoral within the northwest state.
The governor sanctioned the bill's transmission while leading the 31st State Executive Council meeting at the Government House Annex in Kwankwasiyya City. This information was conveyed in a statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, on Friday, September 12, 2025.
As per the statement, the bill explicitly forbids same-sex marriage and practices locally known as Madugo and Liwadi, which the government deems unacceptable. "Under no circumstances will we permit actions that contradict our religion and traditions to take hold in Kano. This government is committed to safeguarding the moral integrity of our society. Upon being enacted into law by the State Assembly, individuals found guilty of participating in or promoting same-sex marriage and associated practices will face severe legal repercussions."
Governor Yusuf expressed his belief that lawmakers would prioritize the bill, recognizing its significance for the moral and social welfare of the state.
It is noteworthy that the federal government has refuted claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intends to introduce LGBT rights in the country.
In clarifying the rumor surrounding the Samoa Agreement, the presidency stated that Nigerian law takes precedence over the agreement. The government reassured that President Tinubu would not endorse any agreement that contradicts the interests of Nigerians.
