The sentencing of the Chicago woman who assisted in the mur-der of pregnant teen Marlen Ochoa-Lopez has been finalized
Desiree Figueroa, 29, reached an agreement to testify against her mother, Clarissa Figueroa, in return for a reduced sentence. The pair enticed 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez to their residence in 2019 by offering free baby clothes. Prosecutors stated that they strangled Ochoa-Lopez, removed her baby from her womb, and left the young woman in a trash can outside.
Clarissa then claimed the baby as her own, who survived for two months. Clarissa was sentenced to 50 years last month, while Desiree was sentenced to 30 years on Thursday. Nevertheless, Ochoa-Lopez's family believes that the punishment is inadequate considering the severity of the crime.
The victim's husband released a statement expressing his inability to confront Desiree in court, referring to her as a monster. Instead, a victim impact statement was presented in court.
"This is a barbaric act that robbed us of a loving mother and caused unimaginable suffering to our family," the statement from Ochoa-Lopez’s husband stated. "No sentence can bring Marlen back or undo the damage inflicted, but we believe that justice has not been fully served."
