A legislative proposal aimed at establishing a coastal state from the existing Ondo State successfully passed its initial reading in the Senate on Wednesday.
This bill, introduced by Jimoh Ibrahim, the senator for the Ondo South Senatorial District, seeks a constitutional amendment to facilitate the formation of a coastal state from Ondo State.
Ibrahim advocates for this new state to promote accelerated development in the riverine communities located in the Southern Senatorial District of Ondo State.
He expressed confidence that the bill will progress through the second and third readings during the next session of the Upper Chamber. This initiative contributes to the increasing number of proposals in the National Assembly aimed at creating new states throughout Nigeria.
Additionally, in the Senate, another significant proposal is being put forward by Senator Kawu Suleiman Abdurrahman, who represents the Kano South Senatorial District. This bill aims to establish Tiga State from the current Kano State.
Entitled the "Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (Creation of Tiga State) Bill, 2024," it seeks to amend pertinent sections of the 1999 Constitution to facilitate the establishment of the new state.
