New COVID-19 Variant XEC Identified in 29 Nations - Government Issues Warning - Health.

The Federal Government, via the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has called upon health authorities to implement heightened alert systems in light of the newly identified XEC COVID-19 variant, which is swiftly disseminating worldwide.

XEC represents the most recent addition to the extensive list of past and present COVID variants under observation as the virus continues to evolve naturally.

This instruction follows the identification of the strain, initially discovered in Australia, which has now been confirmed in 29 nations.

The information was conveyed in a letter dated December 5, which was made accessible to PUNCH Online on Saturday. The correspondence was directed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary and Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, Dr. O.N. Anuma.

The letter stated, “I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant that has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally.

“It is important to note that this variant has demonstrated a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns regarding its potential implications for public health.”

Anuma underscored the necessity for vigilance and prompt action.

“Alert systems should be activated immediately across our hospitals to maintain a high index of suspicion for patients exhibiting COVID-like symptoms,” he asserted.

The directive also underscored the significance of collaboration and timely information-sharing among health institutions and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to facilitate an effective response.

Medical professionals are encouraged to enhance monitoring protocols and disseminate critical data concerning the XEC variant.

“We request your committee to work in conjunction with all relevant stakeholders to share essential data regarding this strain and to implement improved monitoring protocols.

“Timely information sharing among pertinent stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, will be crucial for effective response strategies,” he cautioned.

In September, PUNCH Healthwise disclosed that the XEC variant has disseminated to 27 nations, including France and the United States, resulting in infections in over 600 individuals.

Research conducted by PUNCH Healthwise indicated that XEC was first detected in Germany in June, with additional cases of this variant subsequently reported in the UK, the US, Denmark, and various other countries.

Scientists suggest that XEC possesses several new mutations that could facilitate its spread this autumn; however, vaccines are expected to continue providing protection against severe cases.
